London doesn't empty out the way Mediterranean cities do, but August is still its softest stretch — Parliament is in recess, the business calendar goes quiet, and central rates ease off their summer peak. For a US traveler, a Thursday-night departure lands you in the city Friday morning with a full weekend ahead.

The value play is central and near a transit hub: we're seeing rooms around the St Pancras and King's Cross area — where you can be almost anywhere in the city, or on a train to Paris, within minutes — comfortably under $115 a night this week. For central London in summer, that's rare.

And if you're going to splurge once this year, August is when the marquee properties are most gettable. London's grande-dame five-stars in Mayfair, the ones that routinely run well past $800 in season, turn up in the high-$500s this time of year. Here's the counterintuitive one. San Francisco's coldest, foggiest stretch is summer — Karl the Fog rolls in through July and August while the rest of the country bakes. Tourists who don't know that book elsewhere, which means the city's late-summer weekend rates are softer than its famously expensive reputation suggests.

You've got a real spread to choose from this week: a downtown boutique walkable to Union Square and the cable cars around $160, or a step up to a waterfront hotel at Fisherman's Wharf, steps from the Hyde Street Pier, closer to $230. Pack a real jacket — August evenings genuinely need one — and you get one of the world's great cities at a discount its winter self would never offer.

How to Book a City Weekend in a Falling Market
