February is the sweet spot for budget travel. Holiday crowds are gone, spring break hasn't started, and airlines and hotels are desperate to fill seats. We dug through thousands of deals to find five destinations where you can escape for a weekend without spending more than $300 — flights and hotel included.
1. Miami Beach, Florida
Hotel rates drop 30-40% between January and mid-February compared to peak season, and direct flights from most major East Coast hubs run under $120 round-trip. That's your window.
The play here is to skip the South Beach tourist traps entirely. Stay in Mid-Beach around 40th Street, where boutique hotels go for $89-$129 a night. You're still steps from the sand, you can eat incredible Cuban food on Calle Ocho for next to nothing, and you won't spend a dime on velvet-rope nightclubs. Flights run $80-$140 round-trip from NYC, Atlanta, or Chicago, which means your whole weekend comes in at $250-$290.
Booking Tip
Fly on Thursday evening, return Sunday afternoon. You get three full beach days and skip the Friday price surge.
2. San Juan, Puerto Rico
No passport needed, February temps sit at a perfect 80 degrees, and because it's technically domestic, flights are often cheaper than you'd expect.
Old San Juan is walkable and basically free. The colonial architecture, El Morro fortress, and street art scene don't cost a thing. Grab a guesthouse in Condado for $70-$100 a night and eat mofongo at a local fonda for eight bucks. With flights running $100-$180 round-trip from major hubs, you're looking at a weekend total of $240-$280.
3. New Orleans, Louisiana
If you time it right — early February, before Mardi Gras kicks in — you get all the magic of New Orleans at shoulder-season prices. Same incredible food, same live jazz, way fewer crowds.
The French Quarter and Garden District are free to wander all day. Frenchmen Street has live jazz every night, and you just need to buy a drink to enjoy it. Po'boys at Parkway run about $12. Flights are $80-$150 round-trip, hotels land at $75-$110 a night, and your weekend total sits comfortably at $230-$270. It's one of the best food cities in the country for under $300.
Insider Move
Book a hotel on Magazine Street or in the Marigny instead of the French Quarter. Same walkability, 40% cheaper.
4. Las Vegas, Nevada
Outside of Super Bowl weekend, February is one of the cheapest months in Vegas. We've seen Strip hotels going for $39 a night, which is almost comically low.
The trick to cheap Vegas is avoiding the things that are specifically designed to separate you from your money — gambling and nightclubs. Instead, catch the free Bellagio fountain shows, hit a $15 lunch buffet, drive 30 minutes out to Red Rock Canyon for a hike, and people-watch on Fremont Street. Flights run $60-$130 round-trip, and with hotel rates that low, you can pull off an entire weekend for as little as $140-$260.
5. Cancun, Mexico
This is the cheapest window before spring break drives prices up in March. Early February gets you 85-degree weather, warm Caribbean water, and hotel zone rates that haven't spiked yet.
Stay in the hotel zone for beach access, but take the 15-minute bus ($1 fare) into downtown Cancun for food. Tacos al pastor for two dollars, ceviche for five. Snorkeling at Punta Nizuc runs about $25 and it's honestly better than most paid tours. Flights are $150-$250 round-trip, hotels go for $50-$80 a night, and your weekend total lands around $250-$300.
Good to Know
You'll need a passport for Cancún, but not a visa for stays under 180 days. Make sure yours is valid before booking.
The Bottom Line
All five destinations are doable for under $300 if you book 2-3 weeks ahead, fly midweek, and skip the tourist-trap hotels. February is genuinely one of the best months to travel on a budget — don't let it pass you by.
